Millimetres, inches and pixels explained

Printed photos are measured in millimetres or inches, while online forms use pixels. To convert, multiply the size in inches by the print resolution (DPI). For millimetres, divide by 25.4 first.

  • Formula: pixels = (mm ÷ 25.4) × DPI
  • Example: 35 mm at 300 DPI = (35 ÷ 25.4) × 300 ≈ 413 pixels
  • 300 DPI is the standard for photo printing; 600 DPI gives extra sharpness for large prints.

Head size and position

Many countries also set the height of the head, measured from the chin to the top of the hair (crown). For a 35 × 45 mm photo this is usually 32–36 mm, which means the face should fill about 70–80% of the photo height. The head must be centred, looking straight at the camera, with both ears or the full face outline visible.

Background colour rules

  • White: USA, India, China, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Malaysia, Singapore, Canada and most visa applications.
  • Light grey or cream: UK, Germany, New Zealand.
  • Grey: Bangladesh e-passport photos for children under 6 (3R print).
  • The background must be plain, without patterns, shadows or objects.

Digital photos for online applications

When you apply online you upload a file instead of a printed photo. The form usually states a minimum pixel size and a maximum file size, such as 600 × 600 px for the US or 300 × 300 px and under 100 KB for many Bangladeshi forms. The photo maker lets you set both before downloading.
